Regional Development, Innovation, Sustainability, And Productivity Will Be the Main Topics of The Side Events at The XVI SIMPOSIO

  • The SNMPE, in partnership with embassies, chambers of commerce, and international institutions, will organize forums to discuss key issues such as critical minerals, exploration, water management, ESG, and regional development, among others.

Lima, May 21, 2026. Against a backdrop marked by growing global demand for minerals, the need to accelerate new investments, and the sustainability challenges facing the sector, the SIMPOSIO – XVI International Mining Meeting, organized by the National Society of Mining, Petroleum, and Energy (SNMPE), will feature a program of side events designed to explore in depth the issues that are critical to the Peruvian mining industry.

These sessions will allow the discussion to move beyond a general overview and focus on specific issues on the public and business agendas: from mining exploration and the development of critical minerals to water management, ESG standards, public-private partnerships for regional development, gender diversity, the formalization of responsible value chains, and the potential to add more value to copper production.

The side events program will bring together representatives from multilateral organizations, embassies, technical institutions, government authorities, international experts, and companies, establishing the XVI SIMPOSIO as a platform for technical and strategic dialogue to analyze how Peru can establish itself as a major destination for mining investment in an increasingly competitive global landscape.

Highlights of the scheduled events include the panel discussion “Paving the Way for Diversity and Gender Equality in the Peruvian Mining Sector,” organized in collaboration with the Australian Embassy. This panel will address the progress made and challenges faced in promoting a more inclusive industry. It will feature Ambassador James Yeomans, as well as María Paz Nuñez from Ausenco; Lorena Carrillo from BHP; and Janet Zehnder from Bradken Chilca.

The British Embassy will present the “BGS Project – Northern Territorial Corridor,” which prioritizes geological information, territorial planning, and sustainability to drive mining development. Flor Pinares, Mining and Energy Manager at the British Embassy; Luis Miguel Incháustegui, Director of Social and Corporate Affairs at Pan American Silver – Peru; Gaby Julca, Director General of Promotion and Sustainability at the Ministry of Energy and Mines (MINEM); and Ricardo Labó, Senior Mining Specialist at the World Bank Group, will participate.

The Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands will lead the panel discussion titled “Opportunities to Strengthen Copper and Lithium Value Chains: EU-LATAM Partnership on Sustainable Mining,” which will focus on the sustainable development of these critical minerals and the EU-LATAM partnership. It will feature Eduardo Barrera (Mining Expert, CRM Facility, EU) as a speaker and Vanessa Muñoz (Officer for Critical Raw Materials Affairs) as moderator. The panel will include Mayra Figueroa, Deputy Minister of Mines at MINEM; Pamela Antonioli, General Manager of the Mining Innovation Hub of Peru; and Elizabeth Morales, Head of Environment and Sustainability Leader at ARCADIS.

The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) will lead the roundtable “Public-Private Partnership Instruments for the Development of Mining Regions,” which will analyze how to coordinate investment, institutional frameworks, and decentralized development in areas linked to mining activity. The session will feature Ana Margarita Trujillo, Senior Investment Officer and Head of Mining at IDB Invest, and Carolina Rojas, Head of Mining at the IDB. The panelists will include Alexandra Laverdure, Manager of Institutional Relations at Hudbay; Roger Guevara, Regional Governor of Cajamarca; Manuel Glave, researcher at GRADE; and Denisse Miralles, Director of Decentralized Investments at ProInversión.

The program will also include the panel discussion “Critical Minerals in Peru: Where Are the Opportunities?” organized in partnership with the Colorado School of Mines. This roundtable will discuss the role that Peru can play in addressing global demand for strategic inputs for the energy transition and new technologies. The keynote speaker for this session will be Tom Brady, a professor at the Colorado School of Mines. The panelists are Rasul Camborda, an attorney at ALALAW; Ricardo Labó, a senior mining specialist at the World Bank; and Madeleine Guillen, a research professor at the National University of San Agustín of Arequipa (UNSA).

Another panel, in partnership with S&P Global, will be titled “Times of Exploration and Mining Development in the Face of Growing Global Demand for AI and Electrification.” This session will address the challenge of meeting the growing demand for minerals when exploration, permitting, and project development processes are slow. Eleonor Kramarz of S&P Global will be the speaker and will also serve on the panel alongside Carlos Gallardo, general manager of the Peruvian Institute of Economics, and Paolo Alzamora, president of Ingemmet. The moderator will be Jonas Mota-e-Silva, exploration manager at the mining company Rio Tinto.

The session “Beyond Sustainability: ESG Standards for World-Class Projects,” in partnership with the International Finance Corporation (IFC), will focus on sustainability. It will examine how environmental, social, and governance (ESG) standards are key to the viability, financing, and legitimacy of mining projects. The speakers for this segment are Pablo Taborga and Raymi Beltran from IFC’s Environment and Social Affairs department, representing Southern LAC and Northern LAC, respectively. Panelists include Gonzalo Quijandría, Director of Corporate Affairs and Sustainability at Minsur, and Cecilia Rabitsch, Vice President of Social, Environmental, and Sustainability Affairs at Engie Peru.

Additionally, the Swiss Embassy and Swiss Better Gold will host the roundtable “Swiss Better Gold Sourcing Strategy: The Role of Processing Plants in the Gold MAPE,” focused on building more responsible value chains for artisanal and small-scale mining. The dialogue will bring together representatives from the Swiss Better Gold Association, led by its president, Oliver Demierre, as well as officials from Minera Orex, OCIM, Grupo Metalor, and the Swiss State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO).

The Peruvian-German Chamber of Commerce will lead the panel discussion on “Integrated Water Management in the Mining Sector,” a key issue for the industry’s sustainability and its relationship with local communities. This session will feature Julian Fernandez, General Manager of GWE Tubomin, as the keynote speaker; and panelists Yvonne Lamparte, Superintendent of Environmental Management at Compañía Minera Poderosa; Pamela Antonioli, General Manager of the Peruvian Mining Innovation Hub; and Francisco Indacochea, General Manager and Spokesperson for the German Technology Basket at AHK Peru.

Finally, the World Bank will host the roundtable “Is it possible to continue increasing added value in the mining value chain? The challenge of copper metallurgy and manufacturing in Chile and Peru,” which aims to discuss how both countries can move toward greater productive sophistication in the copper sector. The speaker for this session is Sebastián Gatica, senior consultant at CRU, and participants will include representatives from Indeco-Nexans, Plusmining, and the World Bank.
With this program, the XVI SIMPOSIO aims to contribute to a broader discussion on the future of mining in Peru—not only in terms of investment and production, but also in terms of innovation, sustainability, regional development, and the country’s ability to respond to the new demands of the global market.
