XVI SIMPOSIO: Artificial Intelligence Is the New Ally for Boosting Mining Production

Lima, May 19, 2026. The SIMPOSIO – XVI International Mining Meeting, organized by the National Society of Mining, Petroleum, and Energy (SNMPE), will feature a session dedicated to the discussion of technology and artificial intelligence, titled “Technology and Innovation: A Challenge for Growth Across All Sectors”.

The session will examine the role of technology and artificial intelligence as drivers of productivity and competitiveness. It will focus on their applications in decision-making and in the digital transformation of productive sectors, such as mining.

Diego Montoya, Google’s Country Manager for Peru and Ecuador, will deliver the keynote address titled “AI as the New Global Operating System”. In his talk, Montoya will discuss how artificial intelligence is redefining the operations of businesses, industries, and governments worldwide. He will also discuss how AI-based tools are transforming decision-making, optimizing processes, and creating new growth opportunities for various economic sectors.

The event will also feature a panel of experts led by Jorge Benavides, Country Manager for Peru at First Quantum Minerals. The panel of experts will include representatives from various industries, such as Manuel Van Oordt, CEO of Latam Airlines Peru; Alfonso Bustamante, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Agrícola Cerro Prieto; Pedro Lerner, CEO of Grupo UNACEM; and Santiago Basualdo, Manager of the Large-Scale Mining Division at Ferreyros S.A. The multisectoral discussion will explore how different industries are adopting technology and artificial intelligence to improve their competitiveness and what conditions the country needs to accelerate that transformation.

As part of the thematic session, Iván López, Vice President of Value Engineering at BHP, will present “Capital Efficiency: A Systems Thinking Approach to the Deployment of AI and Digital Twins”. During his presentation, he will explain how advanced technologies enable optimized capital management, improved operational planning, and enhanced mining productivity through digital simulation tools and applied artificial intelligence.

The SIMPOSIO – XVI International Mining Meeting will take place from May 26 to 28 at the JW Marriott Hotel in Lima, under the slogan “Mining that integrates, builds the present, and transforms the future.” This event will bring together business leaders, government authorities, academics, and international experts to discuss the industry’s future amid global high demand for minerals.
