Carlos Batlle will address the challenges of power system reliability for mining and the energy transition at the XVI SIMPOSIO

  • The scholar will analyze the criteria that a reliable and resilient electric power system must meet in the context of the energy transition.
    ● His presentation will address the impact of power supply quality on energy security and economic development.

Lima, April 22, 2026. The SIMPOSIO – XVI International Mining Conference, organized by the National Society of Mining, Petroleum, and Energy (SNMPE) will feature Carlos Batlle, a professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering at the ICAI School of Engineering, part of Comillas Pontifical University in Madrid, who will deliver a specialized lecture on the principles that a reliable and resilient electrical system must meet in the context of the energy transition.

Batlle will analyze, from an international perspective, the technical, regulatory, and operational criteria necessary to ensure the proper functioning of electric power systems, taking into account the distinct needs of the industrial sector and residential users. He will also discuss how these factors directly impact service quality, energy security, and economic competitiveness.

“A resilient power system must not only guarantee continuity of supply but also adapt to an increasingly diverse energy mix, with higher reliability demands from industry and rising quality standards for users”, Batlle noted.

Later, Batlle will participate in a roundtable moderated by Walter Sciutto, chair of the SNMPE’s Electricity Sector Committee and general manager of Pluz Perú. The panel will also include Juan Ricardo Ortega, president of Grupo Energía Bogotá, Colombia; Olivia Heuts, Vice President of Commercial and Business Development at Transelec, Chile; Rosa María Flores Araoz, CEO of Kallpa, Peru; and Eduardo Landín, CEO of Hochschild Mining, Peru.

This session of the SIMPOSIO will examine the challenges facing electricity systems amid increasing electrification, the integration of renewable energy, and greater reliance on electricity for industrial and social development. In this context, Batlle’s presentation will provide key insights into how the design and management of electricity systems influence economic stability and countries’ ability to sustain orderly and safe energy transitions.

Carlos Batlle is a renowned international professor and research scholar in the regulation, planning, and operation of electric power systems, with extensive experience analyzing electricity markets and energy policies in Europe and Latin America. His academic and consulting work has established him as a leading authority on efficient, reliable electric power systems geared toward sustainable development.

The SIMPOSIO – XVI International Mining Meeting will take place from May 26 to 28 at the JW Marriott Hotel in Lima, under the slogan “Mining that integrates, builds the present, and transforms the future.” It will bring together business leaders, government authorities, academics, and international experts to discuss investment, sustainability, innovation, and a roadmap towards a modern and competitive mining sector.
