Economist Dambisa Moyo will be the keynote speaker at XVI SNMPE SIMPOSIO

  • Recognized by TIME as one of the world’s most influential figures in economics and global leadership.
  • The distinguished economist will deliver her first-ever conference presentation in Peru, invited by the SNMPE for the SIMPOSIO – XVI International Mining Meeting.
  • In her bestseller “Edge of Chaos,” Moyo argues that economies anchored in short-term solutions will be unable to sustain their competitiveness. True relevance demands structural reforms: redesigning how we manage resources, how we develop talent, and how we build long-term policies.

LIMA, Peru – January 15, 2026. The National Society of Mining, Petroleum, and Energy (SNMPE) has announced that Dr. Dambisa Moyo will be the keynote speaker at the SIMPOSIO – XVI International Mining Meeting, to be held from May 26 -28, 2026, at the JW Marriott Hotel in Lima, Perú.

Dr. Moyo, who was born in Zambia and raised between Africa and the United States, is one of the most influential economists on the global stage. She holds degrees from Harvard and Oxford universities and developed a significant portion of her career at the World Bank and Goldman Sachs. Her work focuses on economic growth, geopolitics, corporate sustainability, and investment strategies, and she stands out for her ability to translate complex analysis into high-impact economic decisions.

She defines herself as an “eternal optimist” regarding the potential of developing countries. In a recent interview with Forbes, she noted: “I grew up in a poor economy. Throughout my life, I heard many times: ‘You can’t do it. You can’t go to Harvard. You can’t go to Oxford.’ But I grew up in a home where my parents never discouraged us. During my PhD, I focused on savings because they are an essential engine of economic growth.”

The author of the bestseller Edge of Chaos argues that if developing countries want to capitalize on their advantages—natural resources, location, and demographic growth—they must implement long-term reforms that strengthen institutions, governance, education, economic diversification, and global integration. Public policies that remain focused on the short term or lack a structural vision run the risk of remaining “on the edge of chaos.”

In her keynote presentation, Moyo will analyze how a country with Peru’s potential can design strategies to maximize its opportunities—especially in sectors like mining—and transform them into sustained, competitive, and responsible growth.

Her participation in the SIMPOSIO will offer a global, rigorous, and up-to-date vision of the international economy, sustainable growth, responsible investment, and the redefinition of development and engagement models within the context of the energy transition.

Baroness Moyo of Knightsbridge—a title held through her membership inthe United Kingdom’s House of Lords—is currently an essential voice in analyzing the major trends reshaping the global economy.

She serves on several global boards, including Chevron, 3M, and Condé Nast, and is a member of the Investment Committee of the Oxford University Endowment Fund. Additionally, she is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

Author of several international bestsellers—Dead Aid, How the West Was Lost, Winner Take All, and Edge of Chaos, among others—she holds a PhD in Economics from Oxford University and a Master’s in Public Policy from Harvard University. Her work is distinguished by its focus on the unintended consequences of public and economic policies, a recurring theme throughout her research on poverty, growth, pensions, and sustainable development.

In addition to being listed by TIME as one of the most influential and prominent figures in economic leadership, her analyses have been published in prestigious outlets such as the Financial Times, The Wall Street Journal, Barron’s, and Harvard Business Review.
