XVI International Mining Meeting

Joaquín Proenza

Profesor de Depósitos Minerales en el Departamento de Mineralogía, Petrología y Geología Aplicada de la Universidad de Barcelona.

Joaquín A. Proenza is a Full Professor of Mineral Deposits at the Department of Mineralogy, Petrology and Applied Geology of the Universitat de Barcelona. He also serves as Coordinator of the Consolidated Research Group Mineral Resources for the Energy Transition (MinResET; www.ub.edu/minreset), a leading reference in the study of critical and strategic raw materials essential for enabling a sustainable and competitive energy transition. His work aligns with the concept of full-value mining, integrating geological knowledge with the efficient and responsible use of mineral resources.

Professor Proenza is actively involved in undergraduate and postgraduate programs related to Mineral Resources at the University of Barcelona, the Autonomous University of Barcelona, the University of Granada, and the International University of Andalusia. Through this teaching activity, he contributes to developing highly qualified professionals in economic geology, mineral exploration and metallogeny. His research focuses on the exploration and modelling of both conventional and non-conventional mineral deposits of critical metals such as platinum-group elements, rare earths, nickel, cobalt, scandium, gallium, copper, germanium and lithium. Using a mineral-systems approach, aimed at improving resource characterization and exploration strategies. He has led and participated in numerous competitive research projects and technology-transfer contracts with geological surveys and mining and metallurgical companies.

Professor Proenza has authored more than one hundred scientific papers indexed in Journal Citation Reports and has supervised over ten PhD theses mainly in the field of Mineral Resources. He has served on the organizing committees of national and international conferences and is a regular reviewer for scientific projects and a broad range of specialized journals.
